Evalutation of Scoial Media Sources

Social media is a relatively new invention that allows people to connect to other people quickly and from anywhere at any time. Because of its ease of use, it has quickly become a popular place for people to engage in informal discourse or post articles they believe prove a point. Sources found on social media have to be carefully evaluated because anyone can post anything, whether it is true or not.

One social media source I evaluated is a Motley Fool article called, Why a GMO-Free Chipotle Mexican Grill is Terrible News. The Motley Fool is an established and respected financial company. This gives the source credibility. They are removed from the moral and safety element of genetic engineering debate; they are concerned with the financial impact of genetically engineered foods. They are followed by many amateur investors and many other financial and investing companies and experts. The information contained in the post can be corroborated and verified through other sources. They do not post specifically on this topic, but they do post updated investment information regularly. They have had an account since 2008. The information is reliable because it is written by reputable professionals in finance.

Another social media source I evaluated is an FDA post titled, Questions and Answers on Food From Genetically Engineered Plants. The FDA is the government agency tasked with ensuring the safety of all of the food we eat, therefore, they are a credible source. They are closely involved in the debate over the merits of genetically engineered foods. they are followed by many scientists in fields related to food and drug safety. The information in the post can be verified through other sources. They do post on this topic. they have had an account since 2010. The information is reliable because the FDA is the main authority on food safety in the United States.
